Investigating Solubility and Temperature

Objective

Examine the effect of temperature on the solubility of various substances in water.

Materials

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Beakers
  • Stirring rod
  • Thermometer
  • Hot plate
  • Notebook for observations

Instructions

  1. Measure a specific amount of water into a beaker and record its temperature.
  2. Add a small amount of sugar to the water and stir until it dissolves.
  3. Continue adding sugar incrementally until no more dissolves, and record the amount added.
  4. Repeat the procedure at different temperatures using a hot plate to warm the water.
  5. Repeat the entire experiment with salt and baking soda.
  6. Record the solubility of each substance at different temperatures in the notebook.
  7. Analyze the data to understand how temperature affects solubility.
