Objective
Analyze and compare the composition of different soil samples.
Materials
- Soil samples from different locations
- Sieves of various mesh sizes
- Glass jars
- Water
- Notebook for observations
Instructions
- Collect soil samples from different locations (e.g., garden, park, forest).
- Dry the soil samples if they are wet.
- Sift each sample through the sieves to separate different particle sizes.
- Observe and record the proportions of sand, silt, and clay in each sample in your notebook.
- Fill glass jars halfway with each soil sample and add water until they are nearly full.
- Shake the jars thoroughly and allow the soil to settle into layers.
- Record the thickness of each layer (sand, silt, clay) in your notebook.
- Analyze the composition of each soil sample and compare the differences between locations.
