Objective
Create a model volcano to understand the mechanics of volcanic eruptions.
Materials
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Clay or plaster
- Plastic bottle
- Red food coloring (optional)
- Tray or large container
- Notebook for observations
Instructions
- Construct a model volcano using clay or plaster, with a plastic bottle positioned at the center as the magma chamber.
- Place the volcano model in a tray or large container to catch overflow.
- Fill the plastic bottle halfway with baking soda.
- Add a few drops of red food coloring to the vinegar to simulate lava (optional).
- Pour vinegar into the bottle and observe the eruption.
- Record your observations in your notebook, noting the intensity and duration of the eruption.
- Repeat the experiment with different amounts of baking soda and vinegar to see how it affects the eruption.
- Analyze your findings to understand the factors that influence volcanic eruptions.
