Understanding the Water Cycle

Understanding the Water Cycle

Objective

Create a model to demonstrate the stages of the water cycle.

Materials

  • Large, clear container (e.g., glass aquarium)
  • Small plastic container
  • Water
  • Plastic wrap
  • Ice cubes
  • Sunlight or lamp
  • Notebook for observations

Instructions

  1. Fill the large container with water to represent oceans or lakes.
  2. Place the small plastic container in the center, representing land.
  3. Cover the large container with plastic wrap and secure it tightly.
  4. Place ice cubes on top of the plastic wrap on one side to simulate cold atmosphere.
  5. Place the container in sunlight or under a lamp to provide heat.
  6. Observe and record the process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation in your notebook.
  7. Note how water vapor rises, condenses on the plastic wrap, and drips into the small container.
  8. Analyze your observations to understand the water cycle processes.
  9. Present your findings in a report, explaining each stage of the water cycle.
