Designing a Catapult

Designing a Catapult

Objective

Build a simple catapult and test its ability to launch projectiles.

Materials

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Rubber bands
  • Spoon (for the launching arm)
  • Small objects (e.g., marshmallows, ping pong balls)
  • Glue or tape
  • Notebook for observations

Instructions

  1. Assemble the base of the catapult using popsicle sticks and glue or tape.
  2. Create the launching arm by attaching a spoon to a popsicle stick.
  3. Secure the launching arm to the base using rubber bands to provide tension.
  4. Test the catapult by placing a small object in the spoon and releasing the arm.
  5. Measure and record the distance each projectile travels in your notebook.
  6. Experiment with different rubber band tensions and arm lengths to see how it affects the launch distance.
  7. Analyze your results to understand the physics of projectile motion and catapult design.
