Composting Organic Waste

Composting Organic Waste

Objective

Create a compost bin and observe the decomposition process of organic waste.

Materials

  • Compost bin or container
  • Organic waste (e.g., fruit peels, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds)
  • Dry leaves or newspaper
  • Soil
  • Notebook for observations

Instructions

  1. Set up a compost bin by layering soil at the bottom.
  2. Add a mix of organic waste and dry leaves or newspaper.
  3. Turn the compost regularly to aerate it and speed up decomposition.
  4. Monitor the compost over several weeks, noting any changes in texture, color, and temperature in your notebook.
  5. Record the time it takes for the waste to decompose fully.
  6. Analyze the process to understand the factors that influence decomposition.
  7. Present your findings in a report, explaining the benefits of composting for waste management and soil improvement.
