Objective
Build a self-sustaining miniature ecosystem and observe its interactions.
Materials
- Large glass jar or container with a lid
- Soil
- Small plants
- Small insects or worms
- Rocks and gravel
- Notebook for observations
Instructions
- Layer rocks and gravel at the bottom of the jar for drainage.
- Add a layer of soil on top of the rocks.
- Plant small plants in the soil and add insects or worms to the ecosystem.
- Seal the jar with its lid to create a closed environment.
- Place the jar in a location with indirect sunlight.
- Observe the interactions within the ecosystem over several weeks, noting any changes in your notebook.
- Record your observations, including plant growth and the behavior of the insects or worms.
- Analyze your findings to understand the components and interactions within a self-sustaining ecosystem.
