Creating a Miniature Ecosystem

Creating a Miniature Ecosystem

Objective

Build a self-sustaining miniature ecosystem and observe its interactions.

Materials

  • Large glass jar or container with a lid
  • Soil
  • Small plants
  • Small insects or worms
  • Rocks and gravel
  • Notebook for observations

Instructions

  1. Layer rocks and gravel at the bottom of the jar for drainage.
  2. Add a layer of soil on top of the rocks.
  3. Plant small plants in the soil and add insects or worms to the ecosystem.
  4. Seal the jar with its lid to create a closed environment.
  5. Place the jar in a location with indirect sunlight.
  6. Observe the interactions within the ecosystem over several weeks, noting any changes in your notebook.
  7. Record your observations, including plant growth and the behavior of the insects or worms.
  8. Analyze your findings to understand the components and interactions within a self-sustaining ecosystem.
